Apizza Fact #1
New Haven-style apizza was created by immigrant workers mostly from the Campania region of Italy including the Amalfi coastline who were in deep poverty. Most were uneducated and unskilled and looked for work in the hustling New Haven factories. Of those men that came over, some were bakers of bread and pastries. It is said that Frank Pepe’s first pie was made with a bread dough flattened out in a disc shape with some added tomato sauce. He sold them to the factory workers in and around downtown New Haven.
